Ayanna Pressley Elizabeth Warren, It’s not a solely Sanders Squad anymore.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) is endorsing her home state Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) in the 2020 presidential election, she announced in a Wednesday video. That puts Pressley at odds with the rest of her so-called Squad of progressive freshman Democrats, though it probably won’t cause too much internal tension.
In her video, Pressley describes how Warren is “consistent” in her messaging and “never loses sight of the people” in her many plans. Warren is “fighting for fundamental change that restores power to those who’ve been left behind, and centers those who’ve never had access to it in the first place,” Pressley continues before channeling Warren’s catchphrase: “Big structural change can’t wait,” she says.
The other members of the Squad — Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) — all announced last month they were endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for the presidency. But Ocasio-Cortez did say she had considered giving Warren her endorsement, and acknowledged she, Sanders, and Warren are all on the “same team” in the long run.
