Thomas Gilmer Republican candidate for Congress arrested.

The Republican endorsed candidate for Connecticut’s 2nd U.S. House district ended his campaign after he was arrested late Monday night, just hours before polls opened for the Connecticut primary.

Thomas Gilmer of Madison was charged with first degree unlawful restraint and second degree strangulation by the Wethersfield Police Department. The arrest stems from a possible domestic assault that took place in Wethersfield.

Gilmer was released on a $5,000 bond before his court appearance Tuesday in New Britain.

The CT GOP Twitter account posted a statement just before 9 a.m. that said, “Second Congressional District Candidate Tom Gilmer was arrested late last night. With the severity of the accusations Mr. Gilmer has ended his campaign.”

“Although we believe in due process, with the severity of the allegations, it’s disappointing and sad if this is the case,” J.R. Romano, chair of the Republican Party, said Tuesday.
